Visa Just Entered the Stablecoin Business and 200 Million Merchants Will Feel It

The world's largest payment network no longer just processes money. It is now in the business of issuing it.

Visa Just Entered the Stablecoin Business and 200 Million Merchants Will Feel It

For decades Visa has been the invisible infrastructure behind the world's payments, the network humming quietly in the background every time a card is tapped, a transaction is approved and money moves from one place to another in seconds, and now that same company has decided that the future of money movement runs on stablecoins, and it is not waiting for someone else to build the rails.

On July 16 2026 Visa announced the Visa Stablecoin Platform, known as VSP, a new enterprise system that allows banks, fintechs and crypto companies to mint, move and manage stablecoins through a single Visa-managed environment, beginning with Open USD, a dollar-backed stablecoin issued by industry consortium Open Standard, and the announcement landed with the weight of a company that processes roughly $15 trillion in annual payment volume telling the financial world that stablecoins are no longer an experiment it is watching from a distance.

They are now something it is building.

The VSP is currently in beta testing with a select group of clients, but the scale of what Visa is describing is significant, a platform designed to serve its network of approximately 15,000 financial institutions and over 200 million merchants globally, giving every institution in that network a simple and secure way to issue stablecoins, transfer them across blockchain networks, manage wallets and integrate dollar-backed digital currency into existing treasury, settlement and payment operations without having to build separate blockchain infrastructure from scratch.

Visa's Chief Product and Strategy Officer, Jack Forestell, was direct about the problem the platform is solving, saying stablecoins are opening up a new layer of programmable money but for most institutions the hard part is not the concept, it is the operational reality, and VSP is Visa's answer to that gap, a single place to mint, move and manage stablecoin operations with the controls, security and network reach that institutions already expect from Visa.

The timing is deliberate and important.

Visa already settles several billion dollars annually using stablecoins and its existing crypto offerings include stablecoin settlement and stablecoin-linked cards, meaning VSP is not a pivot but an expansion, the next step in a strategy that has been building quietly while the broader market debated whether stablecoins belonged in mainstream finance, a debate that Visa's announcement this week effectively ends with a product rather than an opinion.

The competitive context is equally significant, with Circle behind USDC, Tether behind USDT and Ripple all competing in the stablecoin infrastructure space, Visa's entry changes the dynamics of that competition entirely, because Visa brings something none of those players have in the same form, an existing relationship with every major bank and financial institution on earth and a merchant network of 200 million that could theoretically begin accepting Open USD payments through existing Visa infrastructure without any fundamental change to how those merchants currently operate.

For African fintech companies, Nigerian banks and digital payment platforms the longer-term implications of a Visa-backed stablecoin infrastructure are worth paying attention to, because when the world's largest payment network builds the rails for stablecoin adoption the question of whether stablecoins belong in mainstream African finance stops being philosophical and starts being logistical.

The rails are being built, The only question now is who gets on them.

Stablecoins are already mainstream in Nigeria. Monica is already where you convert them, fast, simple and reliable.
