The Scam Looks Real Because It Was Built to, Here Is How to Protect Yourself
AI has changed the fraud game completely. Deepfakes, voice clones, fake platforms and celebrity endorsements that never happened are costing Nigerians billions. Here is everything you need to know to stay safe.

Tony Elumelu never endorsed that crypto platform, Ibukun Awosika never promoted that investment scheme and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala never told Nigerians to put their money into that opportunity. None of it happened, and all of it looked completely real.
This is the defining fraud story of 2026 in Nigeria, and it is getting worse.
Artificial intelligence has given scammers a tool that fundamentally changes the game, the ability to create convincing fake videos, clone voices with just a few seconds of audio and build investment platforms so polished and professional-looking that distinguishing them from legitimate operations has become genuinely difficult, even for people who consider themselves financially savvy.
In January 2026 Ibukun Awosika debunked several AI-generated videos that appeared to show her promoting an investment platform. In February, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala warned Nigerians of an AI-generated video appearing to show her endorsing a non-existent investment opportunity. Tony Elumelu followed in March, disowning a fake AI-generated video promoting crypto platforms and urging Nigerians to be vigilant about online investment scams.
Three of Nigeria's most recognisable public figures, all impersonated by AI within the first three months of 2026. None of them gave permission, none of them were involved. And in each case the videos spread across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok before most people had any idea they were fake.
One such platform, Crypto Bridge Exchange, known as CBEX, collapsed after luring thousands of Nigerians into activating a so-called AI trading feature. Victims lost billions of naira overnight after fake trades and smooth interfaces gave way to frozen accounts and vanished funds. The platform used AI-generated dashboards that showed account balances growing in real time, giving investors false confidence right up to the moment everything disappeared.
In May 2026 Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission [SEC], warned the public about unregistered investment platforms being promoted aggressively on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, TikTok, Facebook and other social media channels, a warning that came too late for the thousands who had already lost money to platforms that looked legitimate, behaved legitimately and then vanished.
Understanding how these scams work is the first line of defence.
Deepfake celebrity endorsements are AI-generated videos that make real people appear to say things they never said, and deepfake technology has become sophisticated enough that visual and audio authenticity alone cannot determine legitimacy, meaning the fact that a video looks real and sounds real is no longer sufficient evidence that it is real, a reality that requires a completely different approach to how you verify information before making any financial decision.
Voice cloning works by capturing just a few seconds of someone's voice from a social media video, a voice note or an online interview and using that audio to generate speech that closely matches the person's tone, accent and manner of speaking, and imagine receiving a frantic phone call from someone who sounds exactly like your brother or sister claiming to have been involved in an accident and urgently needing money, because that scenario is no longer hypothetical, it is happening.
Fake investment platforms are built with professional interfaces, AI-generated trading dashboards that show your investment growing, fake withdrawal confirmations and customer service chatbots that respond convincingly to questions, all designed to build confidence over time before the platform freezes accounts and disappears with deposited funds.
Pig butchering scams involve fraudsters building a fake relationship over weeks or months, often beginning on social media or dating platforms, before gradually introducing an investment opportunity that the victim trusts because they trust the person presenting it, and by the time the scam is revealed the emotional and financial damage is compounded.
Here is what you can do to protect yourself.
Verify every celebrity endorsement through official channels before acting on it. Legitimate partnerships are announced through multiple official channels with verifiable documentation, and any endorsement that appears only on the investment platform itself or through an unsolicited message should be treated as suspicious regardless of how convincing it looks.
Check every platform against the SEC's register of licensed operators before depositing anything. The SEC maintains a public list of licensed virtual asset service providers and any platform not on that list is operating outside the law, whatever it claims about its legitimacy.
Download financial applications only from official app stores or developers' websites, because fake versions of legitimate apps designed to steal passwords, banking details and cryptocurrency wallet access are increasingly common and increasingly difficult to distinguish from the real thing at a glance.
Never send money to someone based on a phone call alone, regardless of how familiar the voice sounds. Establish a code word with close family members that you can use to verify identity in urgent situations, because voice cloning technology makes the sound of a familiar voice an unreliable verification method.
No legitimate investment opportunity requires immediate action, and authentic platforms never use high-pressure tactics or guaranteed return promises regardless of who appears to endorse them. If the urgency feels manufactured, it almost certainly is.
Report suspected scams to the SEC at sec.gov.ng, the EFCC at efcc.gov.ng and the Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team at cert.gov.ng, because every report contributes to an investigation that might prevent someone else from losing what you nearly lost.
The scams have become sophisticated, the defense requires the same sophistication in return, not panic, not paranoia, but the kind of informed skepticism that treats any unsolicited financial opportunity with exactly the scrutiny it deserves before a single naira changes hands.
