She Beat Four Countries on a Vietnam Runway and Nigeria Is Just Getting Started
From Port Harcourt to a runway in Vietnam. From 20 finalists at the Balmoral Hall in Lagos to a Top 40 spot at the 73rd Miss World. Tamunosoye Karibi-George just gave Nigeria a moment worth celebrating and the competition is not over yet.
There is a particular kind of pride that comes from watching a Nigerian walk into a room of the world's best, perform under pressure and walk out having beaten everyone else in her category, and on Thursday August 27 2026 at the Vietnam Beauty Fashion Fest XVII, Tamunosoye Karibi-George gave the country exactly that moment, winning the Top Model title for Africa at the 73rd Miss World festival in Vietnam and earning an automatic place in the Top 40 quarterfinals of Miss World 2026.
She is 26 years old. She is from Port Harcourt. And she just outperformed four other African nations on an international runway under a competition themed Soul of Heritage.
Karibi-George defeated contestants representing Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Kenya and South Africa to clinch the continental title, and the significance of beating South Africa, one of the continent's most consistently competitive pageant nations at the global level, in a category decided entirely by runway performance is worth noting specifically, because the Top Model competition at Miss World is about projection, presence and the ability to make a room pay attention, and Karibi-George made the room pay attention.
The four continental Top Model winners are Nigeria for Africa, the Dominican Republic for the Americas and Caribbean, France for Europe and Vietnam for Asia and Oceania, with one of the four to be named the overall Top Model winner and receive a direct place in the Top 20.
The journey to that Vietnam runway started in Lagos in June.
Karibi-George became Miss World Nigeria 2026 after winning a national contest involving 20 finalists, crowned on June 6 at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, representing Bayelsa State during the national pageant and taking over from Joy Mojisola Raimi, who represented Nigeria at the previous Miss World competition and reached the Top 20.
What makes Karibi-George's presence at Miss World more interesting than a typical pageant story is what she does when she is not on a runway.
A trained communications professional and an associate of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, she founded Beyond Labels, an initiative focused on inclusion, dignity and empowerment for children with special needs, which is the kind of advocacy work that Miss World's Beauty With a Purpose programme was specifically designed to elevate, and which gives her a genuine story to tell on the global stage beyond her physical presence.
Karibi-George has so far featured strongly in three of the four fast-track events, with organisers and supporters calling for increased votes to help her progress towards the crown.
