Nigeria's Passport Just Got Weaker and Only 44 Countries Will Let You In Without a Visa
Nigeria slipped one place to 90th on the latest Henley Passport Index released Tuesday July 22 2026, with Nigerian passport holders able to access just 44 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance, unchanged from the April 2026 edition despite the ranking dropping from 89th to 90th.
The index, released by Henley & Partners to mark the organization's 20th anniversary, assessed 199 passports across 227 travel destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association, making it the most comprehensive global passport ranking currently available.
Nigeria now shares 90th position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan, both also carrying visa-free scores of 44.
The drop reverses what had been a modest upward run. Nigeria climbed six places between January 2024 and April 2026, rising from 95th to 89th, but that progress has stalled alongside a visa-free score that has itself been declining, falling from 45 destinations to 44 after Nigeria lost access to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mauritania, São Tomé and Príncipe and Somalia in recent years, partially offset by new access to several Pacific island destinations.
On the continent, South Africa holds Africa's strongest passport at 49th globally with visa-free access to 101 destinations, followed by Botswana at 61st with 81 destinations, Morocco at 67th with 71 destinations, Kenya at 68th with 70 destinations and Ghana at 70th with 67 destinations, all comfortably ahead of Nigeria's 44.
Globally the gap between Nigeria and the world's most powerful passports is considerable. Singapore retained the top position with visa-free access to 192 destinations, followed by Japan at 188 and South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Sweden sharing third place at 187, meaning a Nigerian passport holder can access less than a quarter of the destinations available to a Singaporean passport holder without obtaining a visa first.
Even the United States, which sits at a relatively modest 10th place globally with 180 destinations, offers Nigerian passport holders who obtain American citizenship or residency more than four times the visa-free mobility of the Nigerian passport alone.
The index rankings are built on reciprocal visa arrangements between countries, meaning Nigeria's score reflects both how other countries assess the Nigerian passport and how Nigeria's own visa policies toward those countries influence their reciprocal treatment of Nigerian travelers, which makes improving the score as much a diplomatic and economic challenge as an administrative one.
Nigeria's federal government completed integration with the International Civil Aviation Organization's travel document verification system earlier this year, a step that officials said would ease passport checks internationally, but the July 2026 ranking suggests that structural improvement in visa-free access requires considerably more than technological upgrades to document processing.
Forty four destinations. Ninety countries in the world have stronger passports than Nigeria's. The distance between where the Nigerian passport is and where it could be is both a policy challenge and a reminder of what Nigerian mobility currently costs in time, money and paperwork every time a border is crossed.
