This is the stated purpose of the Ultimate Championship, to answer the question that a fragmented global athletics calendar, spread across different continents and different competitions throughout the year, makes difficult to answer definitively: when you put the absolute best in the same place at the same time under a format designed for direct competition, who comes out on top?
World Athletics has also introduced specific innovations for this edition, including a lane-draft system for the 200 metres that allows athletes to choose their semifinal lane and heat according to their world rankings, giving the competition's format its own strategic layer, while high jump and pole vault ties will be resolved through jump-offs rather than shared gold medals, ensuring that every event produces a single, unambiguous champion rather than the shared podium positions that have occasionally diluted the clarity of outcomes in field events.
Tobi Amusan brings to Budapest a profile that needs no introduction in global athletics, a world-class 100 metres hurdles competitor with a world record to her name and the experience of competing at the highest level across multiple championships, while Kayinsola Ajayi has developed into one of the most exciting Nigerian sprint talents of the current generation and Nathaniel Ezekiel continues to build a reputation in the hurdles that positions him as one of the country's leading prospects on the global stage.
Samuel Ogazi's emergence in the 400 metres adds another dimension to Nigeria's Budapest contingent, an event where depth of competition at a championship of this quality will test not just physical capability but tactical intelligence and the ability to perform under pressure when the field around you contains some of the best quarter-milers on earth.
