The Falcons Are Out but Nigeria’s World Cup Dream Lives On

Nigeria's WAFCON journey has taken an unexpected turn.

The Super Falcons walked into Sunday’s quarter-final against Cameroon as the defending African champions and one of the tournament's most decorated sides. Ninety minutes later, their title defence was over.

A single goal was enough to decide it.

Cameroon’s Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen struck in the nineteenth minute, and the Indomitable Lionesses held on through the rest of the match to claim a 1–0 victory and send Nigeria out of the race for the WAFCON title. 

It was the kind of match where one moment could write the entire story.

Nyadjou Wamen found the breakthrough early, giving Cameroon something Nigeria desperately needed but could not find: a goal.

The Super Falcons pushed for a response, but Cameroon's defence refused to open the door. Nigeria made changes as the match progressed, with Esther Okoronkwo and Oyedupe Payne introduced in the second half, while Asisat Oshoala eventually entered late in an attempt to change the game. 

Nothing worked.

The clock kept moving, Cameroon's advantage remained intact and Nigeria's comeback never arrived.

Then came the final whistle.

Cameroon 1, Nigeria 0.

For Nigeria, it was a particularly painful exit because the Falcons entered Morocco as the reigning champions after their dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over Morocco in the 2025 final, a result that delivered the country's record-extending tenth WAFCON title. 

This time, however, there would be no late comeback, no trophy lift and no eleventh title.

Instead, Cameroon produced one of the tournament's biggest results.

A familiar opponent, a different ending

There is something particularly interesting about this defeat.

Cameroon and Nigeria have a long history in African women's football, and their meetings rarely lack drama. The two sides had already faced each other in preparation for this tournament, with Cameroon winning 1–0 in a February friendly before Nigeria responded with a 3–1 victory in their second meeting. 

Sunday's meeting, however, carried considerably more weight.

This was not preparation.

This was the quarter-final.

And Cameroon got the moment that mattered.

For a Nigerian side that had already experienced a difficult start to the tournament, including a 2–0 defeat to Malawi before recovering with a 1–0 victory over Zambia and a win against Egypt, there was little room for another stumble. 

One goal ultimately separated the teams.

The trophy is gone, but the World Cup is still there

There is, however, one important reason Nigeria cannot afford to dwell on the defeat for too long.

The WAFCON title may be out of reach, but the 2027 Women's World Cup is not.

The four WAFCON semi-finalists qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the teams eliminated in the quarter-finals move into play-offs for the remaining African places. Nigeria are therefore still alive in the qualification race despite their quarter-final defeat. 

The Super Falcons are scheduled to face South Africa in that play-off on Thursday, August 13, with a World Cup place at stake. 

So, this isn't goodbye.

It is simply a very different road.

Nigeria came to Morocco hoping to defend its crown. Instead, the Falcons now have to regroup quickly, put the disappointment behind them and fight for something just as important.

The African title has slipped away, the World Cup dream has not.

And for a team that has spent decades defining women's football on the continent, the next match could be less about defending a crown and more about proving that one difficult night does not erase everything that came before it.

The Falcons are down. But they are not done.
