Monica Markets | Monday October 12, 2026

The market opens the week in a mood it hasn't worn in a while: Neutral. Bitcoin is still green, Ethereum is leading the gains, and underneath it all, nearly half a billion dollars in leveraged positions got wiped out almost overnight.

THE MONICA COINS

Bitcoin, BTC

$83,425 (Monica $82,429, +0.54% | CoinMarketCap $83,422.20, +0.57%)

Bitcoin opens the week comfortably above $83,000, up modestly on the day and holding its position well below August's euphoric highs but firmly above February's lows. The Fear and Greed Index has actually been tracking this exact arc, Bitcoin's price sat near the top of its range the same week sentiment peaked at Extreme Greed, and the market has spent the weeks since cooling off in tandem.

Ethereum, ETH

$2,554 Monica $2,556.12, +2.23% | CoinMarketCap $2,552.94, +2.16%)

Ethereum is today's standout, leading every asset on this list with a gain north of 2%. It's the kind of outperformance that tends to show up when institutional ETF flows pick back up, and it continues a pattern where Ethereum has repeatedly out-gained Bitcoin on days the broader market turns green.

Solana, SOL

$111.50 (Monica $109.56, +1.97% | CoinMarketCap $111.46, +1.88%)

Solana is having a genuinely strong Monday, up nearly 2% and holding above $111, continuing its pattern of moving harder than Bitcoin in both directions whenever broader sentiment shifts.

BNB

$749 (Monica $744.84, +0.36% | CoinMarketCap $749.04, +0.26%)

BNB opens the week with a small, steady gain, in line with the broader market's quiet positive tone today.

TRON, TRX

$0.3314 (Monica $0.3314, +0.34% | CoinMarketCap $0.3313, +0.35%)

TRX continues its familiar low-volatility pattern, the steadiest asset on the board once again.

Tether, USDT

$1.00 (stable, 5 supported networks), Market cap: ~$184 billion. Peg holding cleanly.

USD Coin, USDC

$1.00 (stable, 4 supported networks), Market cap: ~$73 billion. No deviation worth noting.

THE MARKET MOOD

Fear & Greed Index: 57, Neutral

(down from 58 yesterday, down sharply from 67 last week and 68 last month)

This is a genuine shift in tone. Just two weeks ago the market was sitting in Greed, and seven weeks before that, on August 27, it touched Extreme Greed at 82, the highest reading of the year. That euphoria has steadily drained out since, and today's Neutral reading of 57 puts the market roughly in the middle of its full 2026 range, a long way from February's Extreme Fear low of 5, but no longer anywhere near the overconfidence that defined late summer.

A cooling Fear and Greed reading alongside green prices across the board is, historically, one of the healthier combinations a market can show. It suggests this morning's gains are being bought with more caution than the greed-driven rallies of recent months.

UNDER THE HOOD

The number worth pausing on this morning is liquidations: $402.3 million wiped out in the past 24 hours, a jump of 481.81% from the prior session. That's a significant spike, and it's worth reading carefully rather than treating as either pure danger or pure opportunity. A liquidation surge of that size typically means a large number of leveraged traders, on one side of the market or the other, got caught out by a sharp move and were forced to close their positions automatically. With prices green across every major asset this morning, the likelier read is that this was a short squeeze: traders betting on lower prices being forced to buy back in as the market moved against them, which can itself add fuel to the morning's gains.

THE NAIRA PICTURE

The naira opens the week holding its ground against the dollar. The US dollar is unchanged, trading flat at ₦1,390 to sell and ₦1,375 to buy in the open market, with the CBN's official rate sitting at ₦1,331.19, a familiar gap of roughly ₦59 between the two markets that has settled into a stable pattern over recent weeks.

The real movement today is on the other major currencies, and it's naira-positive across the board. The pound has eased by just over 2% to ₦1,880 selling, with its CBN rate at ₦1,759.16. The euro has softened by close to 2.5% to ₦1,590 selling, CBN rate ₦1,490.80. The Canadian dollar is down nearly 1.5% to ₦1,000 selling against a CBN rate of ₦990. Further down the list, the Japanese yen sits at ₦8.41, the Saudi riyal at ₦354.51, the Swiss franc at ₦1,600.37, the Danish krone at ₦199.41, the IMF's Special Drawing Right at ₦1,801.44 and the ECOWAS unit of account at ₦1,800.11, all broadly steady to softer against the naira this week.

A stable dollar rate and a weakening pound and euro, in the same week, is a quietly good sign for a currency that has spent the better part of three years being the one doing the weakening.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK

The Federal Reserve's October 27 to 28 meeting is now just over two weeks away and remains the single biggest scheduled event for crypto and risk assets through the rest of the month, watch for rate-cut odds to firm up or shift as fresh economic data lands in the days ahead. The SEC's crypto custody proposal remains inside its public comment window, any notable developments there could move sentiment before the rule is finalised. And after today's sharp liquidation spike, keep an eye on whether this was an isolated squeeze or the start of a more volatile stretch, a market this quick to liquidate nearly half a billion dollars in a day can move just as fast in the opposite direction if leverage builds up again.
