Monica Markets | Friday Close, October 16, 2026

After a choppy stretch through the first half of October, the market closes this week in the green across the board. Bitcoin is back above $82,000, Ethereum is up over 3%, and sentiment, oddly, is cooler than the price action suggests it should be.

THE WEEK IN CRYPTO

The global market closes the week at approximately $2.76 trillion, up 1.75% on the day, a genuinely strong finish after the rockier ETF-outflow-driven dip that marked the first half of October. CoinGecko puts 24-hour trading volume near $99.9 billion across the more than 22,000 assets it tracks, a healthy, active close to the week rather than a quiet one.

Bitcoin — BTC

$82,000 (Monica $80,825, +1.13% | Binance $82,124 | Blockchain.com $82,074 | Coinbase $81,538.48 | Nexo $80,560.90)

Bitcoin closes the week back above $82,000, climbing over 1% on the day and recovering ground after sliding toward $82,500 support earlier in the week on the back of $678.9 million in ETF outflows between October 5 and 9. The spread between exchanges remains unusually wide today, nearly $1,600 between Nexo's lowest quote and Monica's price, a reminder that in moments of renewed momentum, pricing across platforms can briefly diverge before settling back into line.

Ethereum — ETH

$2,453 (Monica $2,396.03, +3.32% | Binance $2,444 | Coinbase $2,426.78 | Nexo $2,412.84)

Ethereum is the strongest performer on the board today, up over 3%, decisively outpacing Bitcoin's recovery and closing the week as the clearest sign that risk appetite is genuinely returning rather than just stabilising.

Solana — SOL

$106.50 (Monica $102.64, +3.42% | Coinbase $107.15 | CoinDesk $106.25 | Binance $105.63)

Solana matches Ethereum's strength almost exactly, up 3.42% on the day, continuing its pattern of moving harder than Bitcoin whenever sentiment turns positive.

BNB

$730 (Monica $718.21, +1.11% | Coinbase $742.56 | Binance $729.84)

BNB posts a solid, steady gain to close the week, broadly in line with the rest of the market's green close.

TRON — TRX

$0.335 (Monica $0.3341, +1.06%)

TRX closes the week with its usual quiet consistency, up just over 1% and holding its familiar low-volatility range.

Tether — USDT

$1.00 (stable across Binance, Coinbase and all 5 supported networks) — Market cap holding steady, peg intact.

USD Coin — USDC

$1.00 (stable, 4 supported networks) — No deviation worth noting.

XRP, for context, closed around $1.34 to $1.37 across Binance and Coinbase, holding its own position outside Monica's supported list but reflecting the same broadly positive tone across the market today.

THE MARKET MOOD

Fear & Greed Index: 51 — Neutral, leaning toward Fear

This is the detail worth sitting with. Prices are up strongly across nearly every asset today, yet sentiment sits right at the midpoint of the index, a meaningful step down from the 57 to 58 readings of recent weeks and a long way from August's Extreme Greed peak of 82. Green candles and a cooling sentiment reading at the same time is not a contradiction, it's often a sign that the rally is being driven by genuine buying rather than euphoria, with traders still cautious enough not to be chasing the move blindly. That kind of gap between price and mood has historically been one of the healthier setups a market can show heading into a new week.

THE NAIRA PICTURE

The naira closes the week exactly where it opened it against the dollar. The US dollar is flat at ₦1,390 selling and ₦1,375 buying in the open market, unchanged on the day, with the CBN official rate at ₦1,332.59, essentially unmoved from where it's sat for the past several sessions. That kind of week-on-week stillness on the dollar rate has become the naira's new normal in recent months, and after years of volatility, dull is exactly what the currency needed.

The bigger movement, once again, is in the other majors. The pound closes down 2.08% to ₦1,880 selling, CBN rate ₦1,765.55. The euro is down 2.45% to ₦1,590 selling, CBN rate ₦1,491.57. The Canadian dollar eased 1.48% to ₦1,000 selling, CBN rate ₦990. Further down the board, the Japanese yen sits at ₦8.39, the Saudi riyal at ₦354.92, the Swiss franc at ₦1,590.77, the Danish krone at ₦198.28, the IMF's Special Drawing Right at ₦1,802.78 and the ECOWAS unit of account at ₦1,802.33, all broadly holding steady to softer against the naira this week.

A flat dollar and a weakening pound and euro, in the same week, for the second week running, is quietly becoming a pattern worth paying attention to.

WHAT TO WATCH NEXT WEEK

The Federal Reserve's October 27–28 meeting is now just under two weeks away and remains the single biggest scheduled catalyst for the rest of the month, watch for rate-cut odds to continue firming or shifting as fresh data lands over the coming days. ETF flow data remains the cleanest short-term signal for Bitcoin specifically, after a rough first half of October, a return to consistent inflows would go a long way toward confirming this week's bounce has real legs. And with sentiment still sitting below where price action alone would suggest, watch whether Fear & Greed catches up to the rally or the rally cools back down to meet it.
