From BBNaija’s New Queen to AFRIMA’s Big Countdown, Entertainment Has Plenty to Celebrate

Temi Nkem has claimed the BBNaija crown, AFRIMA is preparing to open submissions for its landmark 10th edition, and Nobel laureate Anne Carson is bringing fresh attention to the power of storytelling. Here is what is moving music, television and culture this week.

From BBNaija’s New Queen to AFRIMA’s Big Countdown, Entertainment Has Plenty to Celebrate

Entertainment rarely stays in one lane for long. One moment, a reality television finale has fans debating their favourite housemate; the next, a new album lands, an awards season begins or a writer receives one of the world's most prestigious honours. This week, there is plenty to talk about, from Nigeria's television screens to the wider African creative scene and the international literary stage.

Seventy days in the Big Brother Naija house have come to an end, and Temi Nkem has emerged as the winner of Season 11, tagged Show Ya Sef.

The 21-year-old was crowned on October 4, defeating Aikou, who finished as runner-up, and Sheba, who placed third. Her victory brought an end to a season that began with 24 housemates competing for a prize package valued at ₦160 million.

Temi's win has since moved beyond the finale-night excitement. On October 6, she received her ₦90 million cash prize and a Hyundai SUV, alongside the other rewards included in her winning package.

Her victory also places her among the growing number of women who have won the reality show, joining previous champions Mercy Eke, Phyna, Ilebaye and Imisi.

But the real test begins after the cameras stop rolling. For reality television winners, the opportunity is not only to enjoy the prize but also to turn public attention into lasting careers, partnerships and creative opportunities. Temi now has a platform from which to build her next chapter, and viewers will be watching to see what she does with it.

African music's next awards race is about to begin.

The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), in partnership with the African Union, has announced that entries for its 10th edition will open on October 11, 2026, with submissions closing on January 10, 2027.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for May 23, 2027, in Lagos, with the main programme running from May 18 to 23. The milestone edition is expected to bring together artists and music professionals from across Africa and the diaspora.

The entry window covers 40 award categories spanning regional and continental music, giving singers, songwriters, producers, video directors, DJs, dancers, choreographers and other eligible industry professionals an opportunity to submit their work.

AFRIMA received 10,717 submissions for its ninth edition, setting a high benchmark for participation. The upcoming edition will offer another opportunity for established names and emerging voices to compete for recognition across the continent.

For artists preparing to submit, the dates are worth marking. Eligible works must have been produced and released between August 10, 2025, and January 10, 2027. Entries must be submitted through the official AFRIMA website, with applicants required to provide accurate information and working links to their music or videos.

With the portal opening on Sunday, the countdown has officially begun. For emerging artists in particular, the next few months could be an opportunity to put their work before a much wider audience.

Anne Carson Wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

Away from music and reality television, one of the biggest cultural announcements of the week has come from the world of literature.

Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy recognising her inventive body of work and its engagement with classical traditions.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson has built a distinctive literary career by moving between poetry, prose, translation and other forms of writing. Her acclaimed works include Autobiography of Red, a verse novel that reimagines elements of ancient Greek mythology, and Eros the Bittersweet, which explores love through classical literature.

Rather than keeping traditional literary forms within familiar boundaries, Carson often brings ancient ideas into conversation with contemporary experiences. Her work has attracted readers across different genres and academic disciplines, earning her a reputation for experimentation and intellectual depth.

The Nobel recognition puts that approach firmly in the international spotlight. It also offers a reminder that entertainment and culture extend beyond the screen and the stage: books, language and the stories people tell continue to shape how societies understand themselves.

Carson will receive the award as part of the Nobel celebrations in Stockholm in December.

FOLA Brings a New Album to the Weekend PlaylistOIP (13).webp

For listeners looking for something new to add to their rotation, Nigerian singer FOLA has released his sophomore album, 9, on October 9.

The 14-track project features collaborations with Davido, Ayra Starr, BNXN, Darkoo, Bella Shmurda and Zlatan, bringing together several voices from different corners of the Nigerian music scene.

The release also includes 2am in Toronto, a collaboration with Davido, giving listeners an immediate entry point into the project.

For FOLA, the album provides another opportunity to build on his growing profile and show listeners more of his musical range. For fans, it arrives just in time for the weekend, when a new project can quickly become the soundtrack to road trips, late-night conversations and social gatherings.

With Nigerian artists continuing to experiment with collaborations and sounds, 9 joins a busy release week that offers listeners plenty of new music to explore.

Nollywood Takes Its Storytelling to the OscarsDEAR AJAYI.webp

Nigeria's film industry also has an international milestone to look forward to.

The film Dear Ajayi has been selected as Nigeria's entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards.

The selection places the production in the running for consideration by the Academy, although submission does not guarantee a nomination. The film will have to compete with entries from other countries as the Oscar selection process progresses.

For Nollywood, the announcement offers another opportunity to introduce Nigerian storytelling to international audiences. Nigerian films have built increasingly visible audiences at home and abroad, while filmmakers continue to explore stories rooted in local experiences, relationships, history and social realities.

The journey to an Oscar nomination is demanding, but the selection gives Dear Ajayi a platform to reach beyond its immediate audience and puts another Nigerian production into the international awards conversation.

The Week in Entertainment

From Temi Nkem's reality television victory to AFRIMA's approaching entry deadline, FOLA's new album and Anne Carson's Nobel recognition, the week's stories show how many different forms creativity can take.

Some achievements arrive with a live audience and a trophy. Others begin with a song, a script or a page of writing. What connects them is the work behind the moment: the performances, ideas and stories that give audiences something to celebrate, discuss or discover.

And there is always something new to add to the conversation. Whether your weekend plans involve catching up on a favourite show, exploring fresh music or following the next major awards announcement, the entertainment calendar is already giving you reasons to look ahead.
