Anthony Joshua Survived the Impossible and Now Tyson Fury Is Waiting

Two knockdowns, One round and a comeback that had nothing to do with boxing but everything to do with what was written on his chest.

Anthony Joshua Survived the Impossible and Now Tyson Fury Is Waiting

There are fights that are about more than fighting and Saturday night in Jeddah was one of them.

Anthony Joshua walked to the ring at the Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia carrying weight that no boxing glove could measure, the names of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele stitched across his chest, the two friends he lost in a car crash in Nigeria in December 2025, a tragedy that left him injured, grieving and facing questions about whether the fighter he used to be still existed somewhere inside the version of him that survived.

The canvas beneath his feet carried their names too, alongside the words My Brother’s Keeper, and his entire team walked with him in a quiet, deliberate show of unity that said everything about what Saturday night meant before a single punch was thrown.

Then Kristian Prenga threw one.

Twenty seconds into the first round a right uppercut from the Albanian heavyweight, a man who arrived in Jeddah with twenty knockouts from twenty wins but almost no profile outside boxing’s hardcore circles, sent Joshua crashing to the canvas and stunned an arena that had not expected the night to begin this way.

Joshua smiled as he climbed to his feet.

It was the smile of a man who has been here before, who has been knocked down by Wladimir Klitschko and got up, by Andy Ruiz Jr and got up, by Oleksandr Usyk twice and still kept fighting, and who understood in that moment that what happened next would define not just the fight but the entire narrative of his return.

Prenga sensed the opportunity. A left uppercut later in the round dumped Joshua on the canvas again, Eddie Hearn barking instructions from ringside, Usyk watching with visible concern from the crowd, the arena holding its breath around a fighter who looked like he might not make it out of the first round.

He made it.

The second round began with Joshua still unsteady, still there for the taking, and Prenga made a decision that will define his career in ways he did not intend, he began to box off the back foot, gave Joshua room and let the Watford fighter find his feet and his timing and his thirty five years of accumulated experience.

Joshua drew Prenga onto a jab, uncorked a crushing right hand and the fight was over. Prenga collapsed to the canvas, more right hands followed and the referee had seen enough.

It was not the performance of a champion at his peak. Joshua himself would know that. The free-flowing destroyer who once swept opponents aside with combinations was not the man in the ring on Saturday night, what was in the ring was something different, a fighter carrying grief and pain and a point to prove, surviving on experience and emotion when technical execution abandoned him in the first round.

But he survived. And he stopped Prenga in the second round. And now Tyson Fury is waiting.

An all-British heavyweight fight between Joshua and Fury has been the most anticipated and most repeatedly postponed matchup in British boxing for the better part of a decade, every time it seemed close something intervened, injuries, Fury’s own return from retirement, scheduling conflicts, the gravitational pull of other opportunities, but Saturday night in Jeddah has cleared the path in a way that feels different from previous moments when the fight seemed close.

Joshua passed his first test against a recognized professional opponent since Daniel Dubois stopped him in September 2024, his only fight in between having come against Jake Paul in December, ten days before the crash that changed everything.

He survived Prenga. He survived the first round. He survived the year that preceded it.

Tyson Fury has been warned.
